A separated eternal peace

"In death are all the same." Of this old wisdom, the
Southern Burgenland municipalities of Hagensdorf and Luising impress: their
shared cemetery is divided exactly based on where the deceased formerly lived.
Hagensdorfer left, Luisinger right
The municipality border of Hagensdorf and Luising leads exactly
by the center of the cemetery: On the left of the way the Hagensdorfer will
bury, on the right of the Luisinger.
“Salomonic” cemetery
Also the situation of the cemetery hill does not prefer a
municipality: From the cemetery hill both localities are not to be seen. To
Hagensdorf there is one and a half kilometers, to Luising likewise.

Everything times two
In the divided cemetery on the common hill it happens strictly,
but fairly. There is all two times: a cemetery tree for the Hagensdorfer, one
for the Luisinger. A tap for Luising, one for Hagensdorf. Exactly the same it is
held with the cemetary pews and with the watering cans.
Call to order around the cross
The cemetery cross is the only exception. In former times there
were two crosses, but that was the bishop at that time from Steinamanger then
nevertheless over too much and it spoke a call to order: ONE cemetery, ONE
cross.
Of dying and living at the hill
The cemetery hill is artificially up-poured and has a history,
which is closely with living and dying in the region connected.
From the grave to the castle…
The cemetery hill was original a pre-historical grave hill,
which was then removed in the Middle Ages to a castle with chapel and water
ditch, probably says the archaeologist Karl Kaus.
… and from the castle to the grave
From this castle chapel then the first parish church became.
Approximately around the church cemetery developed. The church was given up
later - the distance to the localities was too uncomfortable. The cemetery
however remained.
Unusual details
In addition, otherwise the common divided cemetery has to
exhibit some characteristics: While on other cemeteries childrengraves are to be
found usually hidden or near the cemeterywall, they lie in Hagensdorf Luising at
most prominent place with the cemetery cross.
Charm character against bad spirit
In addition in to make graves charm characters were attached in
such a way, which are to protect the dead ones against bad spirit and witches.
