Between Györ and Abda
Sculpture of Miklós Radnóti
The sculpture of Miklós Radnóti on the
road to Abda indicates that the poet was shot and buried in a mass grave towards
the end of the second World War. It is a piece by sculptor Miklós Melocco.
The mortal remains of Miklós Radnóti
were found in a mass grave near Abda. The poet was shot a the field by Györ in
1944 together with the other laborers forced to work in the concentration camp.
In Radnóti’s bag the Bori notebook was found which holds his last poems,
among which is the poem entitled “Gewaltmarsch” (forced march).
Radnóti's Memorial
The memorial is located by the main
country road M1 from Györ towards Abda, turning right by the Rábca bridge it
can be found on the right dam of the Rábca, roughly 300 meters further down.
The site of the assassination of the poet
and his labor comrades is now marked by a tombstone consisting of several
elements and fenced in in the middle of a birch forest. The first elements is
the red marble memorial plaque put up in the 1960s. The memento was now
incorporated into the new memorial group. Behind the plaque on a red marble
column stands the bust of Miklós Radnóti, a piece by László Alexovics.
Behind the bust a huge limestone block symbolizing a flame indicates the poet's
genius. To the right of the bust a marble plaque holds the names of the laborers
executed with him as they are found in the exhumation record of 1946. An adorned
road leads from the dam to the memorial which too is encased with decorations.
