Böny
Cemetery
50 tombstones stand in this cemetery. They
indicate that the last burial here was in 1936. Due to servitude law it is
accessible via private property, the plots surrounding the cemetery have been
sold and buildings were put up there.
Böny has always been a small village, local sources hold the number of Jews
living there between the World War I and World War II to be around 20. The
reason why such a small population had its own cemetery was that the Jews living
in the neighboring communities also buried their relatives here. Inscriptions on
the tombstones suggest that the cemetery was built in the 1850s.
According to the locals here the cemetery is now a dead cemetery, there are
hardly any visitors. It was only put back in order in after the political turn
of 1991, since then the lawns are mowed regularly. Many tombstones are still
lying on the ground, they were either never re-erected or due to the bad
foundations fell down again.
