Pannonhalma
Holocaust Memorial
On the sixtieth anniversary of the
Hungarian Holocaust the sculpture by György Chesslay was put up in front of the
synagogue to commemorate the Jewish victims of Pannonhalma and surroundings.
This initiative by the Karzat Cultural Center Foundation was also supported by
the Ministry for National Cultural Heritage and the National Cultural Platform,
by the Jewish community of Györ and by several companies.
In the name of the Jews of Pannonhalma
Zsuzsa Horacsek held a speech at the inauguration.Kata Borsa, head of the Karzat
Cultural Center Foundation said that next to its cultural goals it is the
foundation’s objective to cherish and honor the memory and spirit of those who
had built the synagogue as the center of their own religion and community life.
With this sculpture we commemorate the Jews of Pannonhalma and surroundings, the
owners and users of the synagogue. “The mere preservation of the small
synagogue is a miracle, as it can no longer be maintained as a functional sacral
place then we can preserve and renew it as a place of community and culture”
she stated during the inauguration in 2004. |
