Jewish Szentpéterúr
Jews have been living here since the 18th
century. In 1870 the highest number of Jews in town was counted, a total of 55
persons. In 1940 only a single Jewish citizen was recorded. The census of April
8, 1944 also held that only one Jewish person was living in Szentpéterúr, who
was then relocated to Zalaszentgrót together with the other Jewish citizens of
the Szentpéterúr notarial district. In mid June they were deported to
Zalaegerszeg.
Two tombstones stand as reminders of the
former cemetery. During the time the Pfeilkreuzler movement was in power Gizella
Csertán hid a Jewish family from Budapest in the village. She was honored with
the distinction “amender of the world”.
