Jewish Várvölgy
The town was created by the merging of Felső and Alsózsid, Jews started to
live here at the end of the 18th century. In 1890 there were 43 Jews in Várvölgy,
the highest number recorded. The census of April 8, 1944 only counted 3 persons,
all members of the same family. The Jewish citizens of the notarial district of
Várvölgy were brought to the Keszthely ghetto on May 16 and deported to
Zalaegerszeg on June 20. The register of names from the Keszthely ghetto dated
May 26 and the list of persons deported to Zalaegerszeg only showed 2 persons,
the spouses Lajos and Lajosné Rechnitzer. There are still a few tombstones
remaining from the Jewish cemetery in the forest close to the town.
